Health wonks question who saves in Trump drug program

President Trump celebrated his administration's efforts on drug pricing, stating that the "most-favored-nation" program, adopted by all 50 states, could secure a political victory in the upcoming midterms. However, health policy experts remain skeptical about the program's direct impact on consumers' medication costs and its long-term efficacy.

The White House projects federal and state governments will reap savings of $64.3 billion, yet these savings may not translate into reduced prices for Medicaid beneficiaries. Brian Reid, a senior consultant at Reid Strategic, emphasized that Medicaid patients already benefit from affordable drugs, and simply calling the program "generous" won't make medicines more affordable.

While there may be a minor advantage for Medicaid programs, most experts doubt that the program will significantly benefit patients. Additionally, questions persist regarding which specific drugs will be included in the initiative and which states will implement the pricing for each drug. Peter Maybarduk, Director for Access to Medicines at Public Citizen, raised concerns about the 10-year projections, citing potential limitations arising from confidential drug pricing agreements that could expire by the end of Trump's presidency.
