Grönland: Dänemark und USA verkünden Durchbruch im Grönland-Streit

New York - The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have announced a breakthrough in their Arctic island dispute. The governments of Denmark and Greenland, along with US President Donald Trump, revealed a potential agreement. The US president had previously written on his Truth Social platform about an already sealed agreement regarding Greenland. According to Trump, the US agreement grants it extensive powers over the Arctic island.

The US, through the agreement, will be able to defend the island without incurring any costs. The Danish government expects a deal to be signed at the UN General Assembly in the upcoming week, which must then undergo parliamentary processes to come into effect. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed her delight in a press release, stating that the agreement is a good one for Greenland, Denmark, and the US.

It strengthens mutual security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic, benefiting NATO and Europe. The agreement recognizes Denmark's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.

Grainland has been in the spotlight in recent months due to Trump's claims of sovereignty over the largest island in the world, causing significant opposition. Greenland is largely autonomous but belongs to the Danish kingdom. Both countries have repeatedly emphasized that Greenland is not for sale. Under Trump's threat, enemies of the US will no longer be able to establish military bases on the island, nor will certain investments be permitted.

Trump also justified his claims of sovereignty by stating that adversaries of the US would attempt to control the island to achieve strategic control. Trump had previously threatened to take control of the strategically important Arctic island, endangering not only Denmark, a NATO partner, but also casting doubt on the unity of the NATO military alliance.

His reasoning: the territory belonging to Denmark must be protected from Russia and China, ensuring the safety of the United States. In December 2025, Trump appointed Jeff Landry, a governor of Louisiana, as a special envoy for Greenland, causing further outrage.
