Ghana National Cathedral Board Dissolved, Site Due Back by 31 October

The Board of Trustees overseeing the National Cathedral project in Ghana has been instructed to transfer control of the project site to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs by October 31, 2026. This directive comes from the Minister of Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, following President John Dramani Mahama's decision to disband the board immediately.

The letter, dated September 18, 2026, was specifically addressed to the board's chairman and members, outlining their responsibilities to coordinate with the project consultant for a smooth handover process by the specified deadline. This action clarifies the board's status, which had previously been anticipated to end its duties under a directive issued by a different government in 2025.

In July 2025, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced plans to dissolve the National Cathedral Secretariat and initiate steps to disband the board, following an audit revealing issues with the project. Despite this, some board members continued to serve because they had not received formal notice to resign.

The latest directive from Minister Ayariga now mandates the trustees to formally deliver the project site to the Ministry by October 31, which will enable the government to assess the future of the stalled National Cathedral project, which has been mired in debates over its construction, funding, and management. Minister Ayariga, speaking on behalf of President Mahama, also expressed gratitude to the board members for their dedication to advancing Christianity in Ghana.
