From hard-hitting sacks to tackling electrical

Shayne Gauthier, a veteran linebacker for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, recently learned that he would not be returning for the 2026 season. Despite his hopes to play another year, Gauthier acknowledged that the end of his career was not as he had envisioned. Born in Dolbeau-Mistassini, Que., the 34-year-old made a significant impact during his 10-season career with the Bombers, earning a reputation as a standout special teams player.

Gauthier’s journey to the CFL began in 2016 when he was drafted in the fourth round of the NFL draft. Initially struggling with the English language and facing unfamiliarity, he quickly adapted and began earning the respect of his teammates and coaches on the field. His tenacity and skill were demonstrated during the 2019 Western Final, where he made a crucial tackle to secure a 20-13 victory for the Bombers in overtime.

Throughout his career, Gauthier demonstrated versatility, showcasing his prowess on both defense and special teams. His ability to make crucial plays in high-pressure situations earned him two Grey Cup championships with the Blue Bombers in 2021 and 2019. Despite the disappointment of not being re-signed, Gauthier remains grateful for the opportunities he had in Winnipeg and has ventured into a new career as an electrician.

Along with his brother-in-law, Marcus Hoch, Gauthier started Haut Electrical, a business that provides residential and commercial electrician services. His dedication to his new profession and his strong ties to Manitoba have made this transition a successful one.
