For Kicok, Everest was never a solo journey

On May 18, Mohd Khafiz Bachok, or Kicok, achieved a significant milestone by becoming the 27th Malaysian to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Accompanied by Sherpa Saila Mingma, Kicok's climb proved that success in such a challenging environment is not a solitary journey. The 47-year-old climber emphasized the importance of teamwork and mutual dependence on the mountain's death zone, where oxygen masks became essential.

Director Ahmad Yazid's documentary, Tekad: Ekspedisi Guthrie Everest 2026, focuses on the relationship between Kicok and Saila, capturing moments that highlight the climbing pair's trust and reliance on each other. The filmmakers, who had previously worked with Kicok on other expeditions, placed cameras in his hands and placed their trust in his ability to manage the technical aspects of filming during the climb.

The 50-minute documentary also features Chew Wei Ngor, or Margaret, who reached Camp Four but had to turn back due to congestion. Produced by Rack Focus Films and Red Communications, the documentary aired during Malaysia's National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, showcasing the importance of trust and cooperation in the pursuit of a remarkable feat.
