Family accuses LASUTH of negligence over accident victim’s death

The family of Olatunde Joseph Ojelabi, a 46-year-old man, has accused Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) of medical negligence. Ojelabi died at the hospital six days after sustaining injuries in a road crash on September 6, 2026. His brother, Kolawole Ojelabi, alleged on Facebook that Olatunde was left unattended for over six hours without emergency treatment after the accident.

According to Kolawole, Olatunde swerved to avoid a commercial tricycle and crashed into a stationary vehicle, resulting in severe injuries to his face. The family claims he was initially taken to a private hospital and then transferred to LASUTH due to the severity of his injuries. Kolawole alleges that Olatunde was left outside the emergency ward when there were no available beds and remained without urgent emergency intervention for more than six hours, leading to his condition deteriorating.

He further claims the family was not adequately informed about the purpose of certain medications or the treatment strategy. LASUTH denies the allegations, stating that Olatunde was assessed and managed by relevant clinical teams and that the patient’s condition was critical, requiring intensive monitoring and multidisciplinary management. The hospital acknowledges the family's concerns and expresses understanding for their grief.
