Europe's AI firms challenge US calls for slowdown

Mistral, a prominent European AI firm, has criticized U.S. counterparts for leveraging safety concerns to bolster their market leadership, countering calls from Anthropic, the CEO of which is Dario Amodei. Amodei urged AI developers to curb their pace of progress and advocated for joint safety measure development, citing potential existential threats from AI.

While industry leaders like Sam Altman and Elon Musk echoed these concerns, European stakeholders remain skeptical. Some local firms, like Mistral, perceive the calls as a tactic for consolidating market share, while others, such as Black Forest Labs, argue that such measures could stifle innovation. Amodei suggested that companies should collaborate on safety standards and employ independent evaluators to oversee compliance.

However, experts like Kristian Kersting cautioned that such self-regulation might lead to "regulatory capture." European policymakers share these worries, with the EU's AI rules intended to set global standards. Nonetheless, Germany's digital affairs ministry asserts that halting AI development is impractical given the nation's demand for digital independence.
