Egerton-Idehen underfire over alleged procurement irregularities, poor staff welfare at NIGCOMSAT

Concerns have emerged surrounding NIGCOMSAT, the Federal Government's agency led by Managing Director Jane Egerton-Idehen, over alleged procurement irregularities and poor staff welfare. Employees have expressed difficulties in the agency's operations since Egerton-Idehen took office in November 2023, citing management decisions, financial obligations, and promotion issues.

Staff welfare issues are a significant concern, with employees reporting the need to finance official local and international trips from personal resources due to delayed or withheld reimbursements. Some staff have reportedly had to borrow money from banks to cover these expenses, leading to mounting interest and repayment obligations.

NIGCOMSAT's spokesperson, Stephen Kwande, acknowledged the staff welfare concerns but stated that the agency is working to address the issues, including salary reviews for underpaid employees. However, questions have also been raised about the procurement process for NIGCOMSAT's new satellite projects. While Thales Alenia Space of France and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) were selected as contractors, it is reported that Chinese company Great Wall Industry Corporation performed better in technical and financial evaluations but was not chosen.

The selection of Hughes Network Systems' JUPITER scalable gateway for NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B satellite ground infrastructure has raised potential strategic, financial, supply-chain, and project-continuity risks due to Hughes' recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The agency's management maintains that Thales Alenia Space and IAI emerged as the "most qualified contractors" after a thorough bidding process.
