Door not closed for Socceroos veteran despite another snub

Socceroos veteran Mat Ryan remains in contention for the national team despite being left out of his first squad since the World Cup, according to coach Tony Popovic. Ryan, a decorated captain with over 100 caps, was the most eyebrow-raising omission from Popovic's squad, which featured seven uncapped players for games against Brazil and Townsville.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper lost his starting spot to Patrick Beach at the World Cup and was substituted during the round-of-32 penalty shootout against Egypt. Popovic explained that Ryan was told he might replace Beach as extra time kicked off, though the coach insisted Ryan was aware of the possibility beforehand. Ryan, currently playing for Levante, has been omitted from the squad despite a strong start to the La Liga season.

Popovic emphasized Ryan's professionalism and distinguished career, stating that he remains available for future call-ups. Uncapped St Mirren goalkeeper Jacob Chapman replaces Ryan in the squad, joining Patrick Beach and Paul Izzo. Other notable call-ups include left-back Kasey Bos and defender Dylan Leonard, both untried, as well as experienced players from overseas stints such as Marcus Younis, Eli Adams, Kealey Adamson, Yaya Dukuly, and Cristian Volpato.

Sixteen players from the World Cup squad return, while Jordan Bos, Cam Burgess, Cristian Volpato, and Riley McGree miss out due to injury or disciplinary issues. The Socceroos could have played up to four additional games this window, but Popovic opted for two to allow players to return to their clubs and prepare for the upcoming Asian Cup.
