Doom Loop? Ed Sheeran struggles against Gaza tide

Ed Sheeran, the internationally renowned pop star, finds himself in the midst of a crisis as he faces boycott calls and desertions for failing to take a stance on the war in Gaza. Known for his family-friendly image and catchy tunes, Sheeran's problems began when rapper friend Macklemore, who performed alongside him, spoke out in support of Palestinian rights and free Palestine during their respective concerts in New Jersey.

Macklemore's subsequent removal from Sheeran's tour schedule led to accusations of prioritizing cash over principles and failing to defend a friend.

Support acts, including singer Finneas and veteran British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, walked out on Sheeran's tour, urging him to cancel the entire event. Palestinian group PACBI even called for a boycott, urging artists, audiences, and crew to avoid the tour until Macklemore's return. Despite his claim that he does not use his professional platform for politics, Sheeran's involvement with Macklemore and his support for various political causes, such as Ukraine and Brexit, have put him in the crosshairs of the Gaza activism movement.

The war in Gaza has become a rallying cry in the entertainment industry, with figures from the Oscars to European film festivals speaking out against the conflict. Professor Julie Norman from University College London suggests that the war's graphic nature on social media has galvanized a new generation around the issue. Music expert Gretchen Larsen from Durham University Business School notes that while Sheeran's most dedicated fans are unlikely to abandon him, casual listeners might feel alienated by his response to the situation.

As the Loop Tour looms, Sheeran finds himself in a difficult position, caught between the demands of his fan base and the pressure to take a stand on the Gaza crisis.
