DJI has introduced the SDR Transmission 2, an advanced wireless video transmission system for professional filming and video production. This updated system operates on a software-defined radio platform, capable of delivering DCI 4K video at 60 frames per second, 10-bit HDR at up to 50Mbps, and minimal latency of 35 milliseconds. The new model markedly improves upon its predecessor, which offered up to 1080p60 video at 20Mbps, by delivering higher resolution and bitrate while maintaining the same low-latency performance.
The SDR Transmission 2 employs an integrated transmitter-receiver design, allowing for flexible configuration based on production needs. Each unit, weighing approximately 136 grams, can be attached to handheld stabilizers, various cameras, and cinema equipment. For enhanced connectivity, an optional expansion board offers SDI and HDMI ports, four USB-C connections, and supports SDI metadata pass-through for certain cinema cameras.
In larger productions, a single transmitter can be connected to up to eight receivers, each capable of handling remote control. The system can support up to five transmitters and 40 receivers simultaneously, enabling the distribution of multiple camera feeds across a set. Additionally, DJI's Auto Channel 2.0 feature automatically identifies compatible units, allocates frequency bands, and adjusts frequencies based on the environment, minimizing manual frequency planning for multi-camera setups.
A key enhancement of the SDR Transmission 2 is its extended transmission range of up to 4 kilometers, a significant improvement from the previous 3 kilometers. The system retains its 35ms latency, ensuring responsive monitoring and remote operations such as focus pulling and gimbal movements. Video output is available through SDI, HDMI, or DisplayPort, with USB-C connectivity enabling high-bitrate monitoring via a phone or tablet.
The DJI Ronin app provides various tools such as LUTs, focus peaking, waveform, and false color, allowing users to switch between camera feeds from an RX-mode transceiver or through the app without the need for disconnection and rebooting.
The SDR Transmission 2 is compatible with DJI's professional stabilisation systems, including the RS 5, RS 4, RS 4 Pro, RS 3 Pro, and Ronin 2, as well as Master Wheels. When mounted directly to supported DJI gimbals, the transceiver can draw power directly from the gimbal, eliminating the need for a separate battery. It can also operate using standard NP-F batteries rated between 6.8V and 8.4V or through USB-C Power Delivery, supporting up to 15V/3A through its USB-C output.
An optional cage further enhances its protection and mounting versatility, making it suitable for demanding setups such as vehicle-mounted cameras.
