Delhi Metro sees record 82.44 lakh passenger boardings amid DTC bus strike

On September 17, 2026, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recorded its highest-ever single-day passenger footfall of 82,44,903 (82.4 lakh) across its network. This milestone was announced by the DMRC on social media platform X, stating, "DMRC Records Highest-Ever Passenger Boardings of 82,44,903 on 17th September 2026 #DelhiMetro".

The surge in footfall occurred amid an ongoing strike by private agency drivers employed by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), who are protesting for wage hikes and improved medical and social security benefits. The strike has led to thousands of buses remaining off the roads, causing increased pressure on alternative modes of public transport, including the Delhi Metro.

DIG of the CISF Unit at DMRC, Santosh Chalke, celebrated the record footfall, crediting the joint efforts of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and DMRC in maintaining security and facilitating smooth passenger movement across the National Capital Region. He mentioned that the milestone reflects their commitment to providing seamless security and commuter experience.

The DMRC had already announced additional measures to manage the increased passenger load due to the DTC bus strike. On September 16, the corporation increased 20 train trips across its network and deployed eight additional trains based on passenger demand, particularly during peak hours. These measures were extended to September 17, with eight more trains operating between 08:00 and 20:00 hours.
