Copra prices may rule at ₹145-150/kg in October on higher demand, says TNAU

Copra prices in Tamil Nadu's Anaimalai market are projected to reach ₹145-150 per kilogram in October, according to a forecast from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC). This expectation is based on an analysis of 25 years of copra price data and a market survey conducted by DEMIC.

The increased demand during the upcoming festival season is cited as the primary driver behind the expected price rise. Traders surveyed by DEMIC indicate that good-quality copra can fetch ₹145-150 per kilogram during October. DEMIC advises farmers to consider these price projections when making their selling decisions, noting that the holiday season is likely to bolster demand for the coconut-derived product.

Coconut cultivation is a crucial agricultural activity in India, supporting the livelihoods and income of millions of farmers and a variety of industries involved in processing and adding value to coconut products. India is the world's leading coconut producer, contributing 30.37% of the global output. In 2024-25, India produced 139.70 lakh tonnes of coconut from 21.90 lakh hectares of land.

Among the major coconut-producing states, Tamil Nadu leads the way, responsible for 92% of India's total production. In the 2024-25 season alone, Tamil Nadu yielded an estimated 43.04 lakh tonnes of coconut from 5.06 lakh hectares. Major coconut-producing districts in Tamil Nadu include Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanniyakumari, and Erode.
