Construction underway on new northwest Calgary library amid gap in amenities on city outskirts

Construction is underway on the Symons Valley Centre Library in northwest Calgary, addressing a gap in amenities for new communities. The $43-million project, set to be completed in mid-2028, includes a 15,000-square-foot library, a multi-modal street, and parking facilities. The new facility will replace the existing library in Sage Hill, which at 1,700-square-feet, is one of the library's smallest branches.

Calgary Public Library CEO Sarah Meilleur stated that the current library is "packed" with over 180,000 books circulated last year. The project has been years in the making, with community advocacy and significant work required to demonstrate its value. Ward 2 Coun. Jennifer Wyness highlighted the challenge of building amenities for new neighborhoods in her ward, noting the lack of services, such as transit and libraries, to meet the growth of people choosing to live in the suburbs.

City officials emphasized that Sage Hill is one of Calgary's fastest-growing areas and one of over 40 new communities in various stages of development on the city's outskirts. While Calgary Transit has recently announced services in the area, some residents feel that amenities still haven't kept pace with the influx of new residents.

David Cooper, principal at Leading Mobility, explained that the challenge of increasing services and amenities in new communities is a persistent issue due to constraints in operating funds. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas acknowledged the $50-billion infrastructure gap, vowing that council will address it during the next four-year budget, with a focus on capital velocity to ensure services meet the needs of the growing population.
