Climate Talks 2026: Experts call for integrated strategy to address complexities of climate-driven migration in Ghana

Climate Talks 2026 convened in Bolgatanga to tackle climate-driven migration complexities in Ghana's Upper East Region. German Ambassador H.E. Frederik Landshoeft highlighted the increasing relevance of climate change as a security concern due to extreme weather and environmental degradation in the Sahel. The event, themed "Climate-Driven Migration and Its Impacts in Ghana’s Upper East Region," brought together experts from Ghana Immigration Services, United Nations Refugee Agency, and local communities.

The dialogue focused on how environmental stress and migration impacts livelihoods and contributes to conflict, economic hardship, and political instability. German Ambassador stressed the importance of policy frameworks to enable displaced populations to contribute meaningfully to host communities, citing examples like bylaws in Upper West that prevent conflicts and promote economic growth.

Participants emphasized strengthening community resilience, social cohesion, and supporting sustainable management of natural resources to reduce resource competition. They also stressed creating targeted economic opportunities for women and young people to reduce vulnerability and promote lasting peace. Ambassador Landshoeft concluded by emphasizing the importance of building strong communities and fostering a partnership based on solidarity, with Germany committed to peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and sustainable development in Ghana.
