Claude Code Can Now Run Multiple AI Agents Simultaneously

Anthropic has introduced a redesigned Projects feature within Claude Code, permitting the simultaneous execution of multiple AI agents within a single project. These agents can function concurrently, sharing the same memory, goals, files, and artifacts. Multiple threads within a project can focus on distinct tasks at any given moment. A central coordinator oversees the project, maintaining organization and directing the collective effort of the threads.

Each thread operates as an independent Claude Code session, complete with its own branch and copy of the repository. This setup enables several AI agents to work separately on different components of the same project. Should two or more threads alter the same code, any conflicting changes are addressed through merge conflicts, akin to the issues that arise when merging traditional pull requests.

Additionally, individual threads can further divide their assigned tasks by employing subagents, loops, and workflows, facilitating the swift completion of larger tasks.

Users maintain control over each thread, allowing them to monitor or modify specific tasks as needed. Direct interaction with individual threads is possible, alongside managing overall progress and providing updates through the main project conversation. The coordinator keeps track of the broader workflow, similar to other systems designed to manage multiple AI agents working together.

Although Claude Code project threads currently operate in the cloud at launch, Anthropic has announced that support for local tools and local code is forthcoming "very soon."

The redesigned Projects feature is currently available in beta for select Claude Pro and Max subscribers. Anthropic has plans to broaden access to all Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users, as well as to Cowork and regular Claude conversations in the near future.
