Captive crew

When streaming the eight-part series American Hostage, viewers may notice a sense of familiarity. The show was filmed in Winnipeg, particularly in the Exchange District, from November of the previous year to early February. Winnipeg served as a stand-in for Indianapolis in 1977. The series, adapted from a podcast of the same name, focuses on the 63-hour hostage standoff between Tony Kiritsis, an angry entrepreneur with a history of violence, and Richard Hall, his mortgage broker.

Fred Heckman, played by Jon Hamm, is a journalist who attempts to help both men survive the ordeal while navigating the ethical dilemma of being a part of the story. Hamm, the show's executive producer, was drawn to Winnipeg by a friend who had previously filmed there. The cold climate and hockey season added to the authenticity of the location.

Local talent was enthusiastically cast, including Giovanni Ribisi as Kiritsis, Mireille Enos as Hamm's wife, and William Jackson Harper as a star reporter. Adam Arkin, another executive producer, also directed half of the episodes and played a lawyer for Kiritsis. The series highlights the strong sense of community in Winnipeg, with many local actors appearing in substantial roles.
