California-guvernør vil ha AI-«kill switch»

California Governor Gavin Newsom has vowed to introduce strict AI regulations in the state, recognizing the urgency of implementing an "AI kill switch" to curb risks associated with rapid technological development. This announcement comes as the federal government hesitates to create any form of accountability for AI development and the consequences of reckless advancement.

In response to this growing concern, Newsom has appointed a task force with two months to propose measures that will strengthen California's AI laws and responsibility standards.

The task force will evaluate requirements for corporations to:

1. Ensure companies cannot create AI without a clear sense of purpose or accountability.

2. Implement safety measures to prevent potentially catastrophic outcomes for humanity.

Newsom emphasized the importance of addressing AI safety concerns, especially as top AI executives have warned of the dangers of unchecked progress. Both Anthropic and OpenAI, major AI companies with headquarters in California, have previously expressed concerns about the pace of development. Despite their California-based operations, their CEOs, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei, have lobbied for stricter safety regulations.

California's economy, which accounts for approximately 14% of the United States' gross domestic product (GDP), the primary indicator of economic activity, is the largest in the country, surpassing New York and Texas. Should California operate as an independent nation, its economy would rank fourth globally behind the United States, China, and Germany.

Governor Newsom, who is considering a presidential run in 2028, is encouraging national authorities and President Donald Trump to review and adopt California's framework, which he believes is "far ahead of all other states."
