Bungoma: Police launch manhunt for persons of interest after more than 30 learners affected by teenage pregnancies

Police in Bungoma County have launched an investigation and manhunt for persons of interest after more than 30 learners at Bakisa Secondary School in Webuye were affected by teenage pregnancies. The school's principal, Ruth Malika, reported that 10 girls are currently pregnant, 13 are young mothers, and another 13 have dropped out due to pregnancy.

The pregnancies have disrupted the education and well-being of the affected learners. Bungoma's Assistant County Commissioner, Emmanuel Kenga, stated that authorities will identify the circumstances surrounding the pregnancies and anyone involved with the minors. The investigation aims to understand how the learners became pregnant and determine if any offenses were committed against them.

School officials have called for swift action to apprehend the responsible parties, citing concerns over the vulnerability of learners traveling between school and their homes daily. They have proposed establishing a dormitory to provide a safer environment and enable students to complete their education. Parents are urged to pay school fees on time, provide guidance, and protect their children during adolescence.

Authorities will pursue anyone found responsible and take appropriate action. This case has renewed concerns about teenage pregnancies and school dropouts, prompting the school community to seek stronger collaboration between parents, teachers, police, and other child-protection stakeholders to safeguard learners and keep them in school.
