Britain’s Prince William reveals finalists for Earthshot environmental prize

LONDON — Fifteen organizations have been named as finalists for the 2026 Earthshot Prize, an environmental competition founded by Britain's Prince William to recognize innovators tackling climate change, pollution, habitat loss and other environmental threats. The recipients of the prize, each worth £1 million ($1.34 million) and support for expanding their projects, will be unveiled on November 17 during a televised awards ceremony in Mumbai.

Among the nominees are the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, a coalition of Indigenous people, ranchers, and governments working together to maintain wildlife migration routes through the Rocky Mountains from Wyoming to northwestern Canada. The initiative employs various strategies to safeguard natural landscapes, including building overpasses, underpasses, and fencing to facilitate animal crossings on busy roads.

Other contenders in the competition encompass an Argentine project harnessing artificial intelligence and satellite data to monitor and track wildfires across Latin America; the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions within the shipping industry; and Orsted, one of the world's leading developers of offshore wind farms.
