B.C. Premier David Eby to speak at UBCM amid snap election speculation

British Columbia Premier David Eby is set to address local politicians at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention, amid speculation surrounding potential disruptions to upcoming municipal elections. The premier recently warned Elections BC and his caucus to prepare for an election, as the U.S. trade war has posed disruptions.

However, Eby's own government is contemplating a snap election, just two years into the NDP government's mandate, which could intersect with the municipal election campaign running from September 19 to October 17. Cori Ramsay, the union's president, argues that such an overlap would be detrimental to citizens, as they should make informed decisions based on separate periods for local and provincial campaigns.

Meanwhile, B.C. Conservative leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay, who faces internal opposition and a recent nine-member defection, dismissed the idea of a snap election as a "cynical move" by Eby, who allegedly knew Findlay would secure a September 26 byelection in Abbotsford-Mission.
