AWS confesses its console causes cloudy confusion for new users

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has acknowledged that its user console can be confusing for new users, leading to the creation of a simplified alternative. In a recent post, Senior Solutions Architect Micah Walter explained that when AWS first launched its storage, compute, and queuing services, anyone with an idea could start building.

However, as AWS added more services and options, its console and user interface became increasingly complex. Walter noted that while this complexity remains crucial for established customers, it poses a barrier for those just starting a new project.

AWS has been working on addressing this issue for nearly a year, after realizing that new users find its existing console intimidating. The solution is a new "getting started experience" designed for these builders, particularly those working at the pace of AI. Walter revealed that the new UI allows users to create an AWS account using credentials from Google, GitHub, and Apple.

Upon signing up, AWS automatically generates a project, eliminating the need for users to complete configuration tasks before they can begin working on their project. Instead, users are presented with sensible defaults and simple administration options.

Once logged in, users receive a prompt to paste code into their coding agent, which automatically configures the environment for the new AWS setup. From there, the user's agent can deploy resources, run workloads, and iterate on the application while following AWS best practices. AWS will apply "sensible defaults" to resources, and users can set a spending limit starting from $20 per month.

The company will suggest a spend limit based on the user's usage, which can be accepted or customized if further scaling is planned. Users will also receive warnings if they approach their spending ceiling, and AWS will pause the project to prevent exceeding the user's budget.

This new user experience is AWS's attempt to win over new users and startups, an effort the cloud giant has not previously made. The Register could not recall a previous instance where AWS created an entirely new user experience to attract these users or admitted that its current console hindered adoption.
