At JD(U) orientation, balancing act over Nitish Kumar legacy, Nishant role

Two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in all 21 BJP-ruled states ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, the Janata Dal (United) is preparing for a day-long orientation program for its lawmakers. The program aims to address the party's complex relationship with the UCC, a proposed uniform regime which the JD(U) has historically approached with caution.

The orientation program will see senior leaders including Nitish Kumar, party supremo Sanjay Kumar Jha, and Health Minister Nishant Kumar speak. Nitish Kumar's son and current Health Minister Nishant Kumar's role is significant, as his appointment signals a potential shift in the party's stance on the UCC.

The JD(U) has a nuanced position on the UCC, which differs from outright opposition. In 2017, the party, under Nitish Kumar, stated they were not opposed to a UCC in principle but argued for wide consultation and consensus. This stance was reiterated in 2023-24. However, recent weeks have seen a shift in the party's position, with some leaders expressing that while they may not oppose the UCC nationally, it should not be implemented in Bihar alone, where Muslims form a significant portion of the population.

The orientation program provides an opportunity for the party to articulate its position on the UCC, while also reinforcing Nitish Kumar's legacy and preparing its leaders for their roles within the National Democratic Alliance.
