Ajit Agarkar Reportedly Told BCCI He Won't Continue As Chief Selector, AGM Leaves Final Call With Office-Bearers

Mumbai, September 18: Ajit Agarkar, the once prominent Indian all-rounder, has reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he wishes to step down from his position as chief selector. This news surfaced a day before the board's 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM), leaving the fate of Agarkar's future uncertain.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Agarkar had already expressed his intention to the BCCI officials in February to seek replacements when his term ended. His contract currently remains valid until October 4.

This development comes after Agarkar's absence from the BCCI's review meeting held in Mumbai on September 3. Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, had previously stated that Agarkar was out of station and unable to attend the meeting due to connectivity issues. At the AGM, the BCCI did not make a final decision on Agarkar's future, instead, authorizing its office-bearers to take a decision on the men's selection committees.

Saikia later clarified that there were still 15 days left for Agarkar's tenure, and a decision would be made soon. If Agarkar does not continue, the BCCI will have to follow its standard procedure of inviting applications, conducting interviews, and appointing a new chairman for the selection committee.

Ajit Agarkar took up the role of chairman of the senior men's selection committee in July 2023. Under his leadership, India secured the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has also been instrumental in bringing about major changes to India's teams across formats. As his term nears its conclusion, the next few days will be crucial in determining whether Agarkar continues in his role until the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle or gives way for a new chairman.
