Abia first lady provides cash support, health insurance for sickle cell, albinism communities

Mrs Priscilla Otti, wife of Abia State Governor, has initiated cash support and health insurance enrollment for individuals with sickle cell conditions and albinism in the state. Each beneficiary will receive N50,000 as immediate assistance, but the initiative aims to facilitate their enrollment into the Abia State Health Insurance scheme for long-term support.

Mrs Otti spoke during the Care and Fair Outreach Day, organized by her Safe Tent Care Initiative in Umuahia, with the theme of care, inclusion, and dignity. She emphasized that the initiative would complement existing healthcare services provided by government institutions, not duplicate them. Mrs Otti praised Jake Epelle, the Founder and CEO of Albinism Foundation Africa, for his advocacy work in disability inclusion and electoral participation.

She also thanked Epelle for his efforts in strengthening democratic institutions through free, respected, and integrity-driven choices. The philosophy of the Safe Tent Care Initiative revolves around Community, Consistency, and Collaboration, as Mrs Otti explained that the organization must listen to the people they serve, especially those with sickle cell conditions who require access to appropriate and regular healthcare, counseling, referrals, and continuity of care.

For individuals with albinism, the initiative focuses on skincare and sun protection, regular eye examinations and vision support, health education, and timely medical attention while addressing stigma and barriers. Mrs Otti highlighted that the communities would also participate in skill acquisition, livelihood, and economic empowerment programs, moving beyond mere financial assistance to provide opportunities for future independence.
