A US NAND factory could reshape storage supply, but not yet for Apple

SK Hynix-owned Solidigm is contemplating the possibility of establishing a U.S. factory for the production of storage chips utilized in smartphones, computers, and data centers. This strategic move aims to lessen their reliance on China, following the increasing pressure from Washington to encourage foreign chipmakers to build within the United States.

According to a report by Reuters on Friday, a facility in Upstate New York is currently viewed as the most favorable option by the company, although no formal agreement has been finalized. The specifics surrounding the location, investment, capacity, and construction timeline remain undetermined at this stage. Solidigm has stated that it routinely assesses various options to enhance its long-term competitiveness, but has not yet decided on a particular course of action.

SK Hynix has echoed this sentiment, affirming that it is also actively exploring different avenues, without making a definitive commitment to the proposed U.S. factory. It is important to note that the proposed project would be distinct from SK Hynix's ongoing deliberations regarding the production of memory chips at Intel's anticipated Ohio facility.
