A mountain, a legend and a dream: Chavela Vargas’ Tepoztlán home

Chavela Vargas, the celebrated Mexican singer of ranchera music, discovered her dream home in Tepoztlán, Morelos, after being moved by the majestic Chalchitépetl mountain. Born in Costa Rica, Vargas arrived in Mexico at 17 and became a revered figure in Latin America and Europe. She made Tepoztlán her residence in 2007, buying the Quinta Monina property from Emma Teresa Ortiz, known as Monina.

The house, a blend of volcanic rock and functionalist architecture, has been transformed into an architectural gem with the addition of orange ironwork windows and terraces. Vargas’ legacy is honored within the house's gardens, featuring more than 60 trees and traditional clay totems, as well as rooms for artists in residence and a cultural space for events.

As Vargas spent her final years here, she found peace and inspiration amidst the surrounding nature, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape and the hearts of those who visited.
