72-hour arrest plan activated after Libode police officers killed

The Eastern Cape Community Safety Minister, Xolile Nqatha, has vehemently condemned the fatal shooting of two police officers at Ziphunzana Location in Libode, South Africa. The victims, aged 51 and 30, were members of the Mthatha National Intervention Unit and the Mthatha Public Order Policing Unit. According to police reports, the incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning when armed suspects stormed a spaza shop, threatening the owner and demanding money.

In response to the threat, the two officers were dispatched to provide assistance. Tragically, they were subsequently found with gunshot wounds.

In the aftermath of the incident, a 72-hour plan has been activated by police authorities to locate and apprehend the perpetrators. Makhaya Komisa, the Community Safety Spokesperson for the Eastern Cape, disclosed that a multi-disciplinary team from the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been deployed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

Preliminary intelligence gathered by the police is being closely followed up to ensure a comprehensive inquiry. MEC Nqatha has urged the investigative team to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

In addition to the police investigation, Nqatha has called upon the local community to assist in providing any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for this heinous crime. The community's cooperation is seen as crucial in bringing closure to the families of the fallen officers and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.
