2 dead after Russian glide bomb hits apartment block

On Wednesday, a Russian glide bomb struck an apartment block in Sumy, a northern Ukrainian city situated near the Russian border. The attack resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to seven others, according to Ukrainian authorities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his outrage over the "absolutely inhuman strike" on the Telegram messaging app.

He stated that emergency crews had rescued four individuals and warned that more could be trapped under the rubble. Pictures shared by Zelensky on Telegram depicted the damaged exterior of the building and rescue workers navigating through the debris. The city's mayor and the head of Sumy city council confirmed that the victims were city employees.

Regional Governor Oleh Hryhorov reported that three of the seven injured were in serious condition. Sumy has been a frequent target for Russian forces, which aim to establish a buffer zone in the region. President Zelensky also reported that Russian forces had struck a clinic in the central city of Pavlohrad and a logistics center outside Kyiv, though he did not provide casualty details.

Earlier, a Russian strike in Balakliia, a city in the Kharkiv region, killed two people and injured two others. Balakliia was initially captured by Russian forces during the early stages of the 2022 full-scale invasion but was later recaptured by Ukrainian troops during a counteroffensive. Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, faced a Russian missile attack earlier that evening, but there were no reported casualties or damages. Both Russia and Ukraine claim to refrain from targeting civilians during the ongoing conflict.
