2,200 Tano North SHS Entrants supported with Educational Materials by MP

Dr Gideon Boako, the Member of Parliament for Tano North in Ghana's Ahafo Region, has distributed essential educational materials to 2,200 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates in his constituency as they prepare to enter Senior High School (SHS). This is the first time such an initiative has been implemented in the area, with the aim of alleviating financial burdens on parents and ensuring that no talented student is denied the opportunity to continue their education due to financial constraints.

Each recipient was given a chop box, school bag, exercise books, and a scientific calculator, which they were already required to provide according to their SHS prospectus.

According to Dr Boako, his decision to provide this support stemmed from his own educational experiences and his desire to prevent any child in Tano North from being discouraged from pursuing education because of financial difficulties or their BECE results. He emphasized that the aggregate score obtained at the BECE level does not define a student's future, urging the beneficiaries to approach their secondary education with confidence and determination.

Dr Boako shared his own journey, recounting how he did not achieve outstanding results at the basic education level and was not admitted to any of the schools he had initially selected. However, through determination and faith, he eventually enrolled at Bomar Senior High School and went on to pursue higher education at universities in Ghana and overseas, including a master's degree at Oxford University.

He encouraged the beneficiaries to take their secondary education seriously, trusting that with determination, they would be able to overcome any challenges they may face.

The financial realities faced by many families in Tano North also played a role in inspiring this initiative. While the Free SHS policy has significantly reduced the cost of secondary education for families, parents are still required to provide several essential items before their children can start school. Dr Boako noted that although the Free SHS policy has helped reduce costs, parents still bear the burden of providing these items, which can be a financial strain, particularly in areas where many families rely on modest incomes.

Former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, who attended the event, commended Dr Boako for his dedication to education and the practical support he is providing to families in Tano North. She emphasized that every form of support can make a meaningful difference in a child's educational journey and encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the assistance they have received.

She urged them to be mindful of their choices, including their friends and their goals, and to not let their past or current situations define their future.
