Zverev, Shelton back on court for Davis Cup qualifiers

Alexander Zverev, the reigning US Open champion, returns to the tennis court this weekend to assist Germany in their pursuit of a Davis Cup Finals appearance. Meanwhile, American Ben Shelton aims to put his defeat at Flushing Meadows behind him. Zverev, the world's top-ranked player, triumphed over Shelton in a four-set match on Sunday, continuing his successful season that culminated with a Grand Slam title at the French Open in June.

A Davis Cup victory would mark a fitting end to his stellar year. However, Germany must first overcome Croatia in a second-round qualifying tie in Halle, Germany and Italy, the reigning champions, will face Croatia and the host nation, also in Bologna in two months' time. In their path to the Finals, Germany is favored to defeat Croatia, who feature veteran Marin Cilic and rising star Dino Prizmic.

Croatia has not reached the Finals since 2023, when they exited in the group stage amid 16 teams. Last year, Germany narrowly missed the Finals when Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz lost to Spain in the semifinal doubles. The United States, the competition's 32-time victorious team, face a tough challenge against the Czech Republic in Prague tomorrow and Saturday as they aim to end their 19-year drought for a 33rd title.

South Korea and India will become the first Asian country to reach the quarterfinals since Kazakhstan in 2021 if they emerge victorious in their match against Spain in Seoul. Rafael Jodar, who turns 20 on Thursday, makes his Davis Cup debut for Spain as they attempt to secure their seventh title against Chile in Santiago. Britain welcomes Ecuador to London, while Austria takes on Belgium, with Alexander Blockx absent after reaching the US Open quarters.
