Xavier Scott: 'I'm my harshest critic'

Xavier Scott, a veteran Illinois defensive back, has been dealing with the challenges of returning from injury and learning a new defense in the 2025 season. Scott missed the majority of the 2025 spring practices due to a lingering ankle/foot injury that sidelined him in the 2023 and 2024 seasons as well. While he acknowledges that his impact has been limited so far with only six tackles and one pass breakup in the first two games, Scott remains positive and focused on regaining his form.

Defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck noted the learning curve for the secondary as they adapt to the different offenses and coverage schemes. Scott, along with his fellow veterans Matthew Bailey and Juice Clarke, is working to understand their roles and contribute to the team's success. Coach Corey Parker emphasizes the importance of accountability and continuous improvement, urging Scott to play at the level he is capable of and maintain a strong work ethic.

Despite the setback, Scott remains dedicated to his game and has received support from his family during his recovery. He is determined to prove his resilience and maintain his position as one of the top players in Big Ten football.
