Why White Pigeon chose to cancel 2026 football season after 3 games

White Pigeon Community Schools has decided to cancel its 2026 football season after just three games. Athletic director Brooke Baechler and superintendent Shelly McBride announced the end of the season on Friday, citing a decline in participation numbers as the primary reason. Both Baechler and McBride praised the community's support, but acknowledged the decision was tough.

The Chiefs lost their first three games - 60-0 to Hartford and Cassopolis, and 36-0 to Gobles. Baechler noted that the program began with good numbers in the summer, but they dwindled by June and again closer to the start of the season. They also mentioned safety concerns as a key factor in their decision. White Pigeon managed to field 18 players during the week of games, emphasizing that the decision was not due to a lack of effort.

The school plans to play a junior varsity schedule for underclassmen and hopes to have a full varsity season next year, pending a post-fall sports assessment.
