White House pulls Trump nominee to head ICE

The White House has withdrawn the nomination of Lance Schroyer, the individual chosen to lead the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, the department responsible for enforcing President Donald Trump's immigration policies. Schroyer, a former US Marine and Oklahoma state trooper, was nominated by Trump earlier this year to assume the role of ICE director, a position requiring Senate confirmation.

The White House released a brief statement on its website announcing the withdrawal of the nomination, though no reason for the decision was provided. The main issue appears to be that the nomination had been stuck in the Senate.

ICE is currently being overseen by an acting director following the departure of the previous interim chief in May. Typically, individuals nominated to head federal agencies should receive confirmation by the Senate. However, this has not occurred for ICE since 2017, with interim directors filling the role during that period. Until now, Schroyer had been functioning as an adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin while awaiting Senate confirmation.

The Trump campaign had pledged to deport a significant number of undocumented migrants, and since assuming office, the president has implemented various measures aimed at accelerating deportations and curbing border crossings. In August alone, nearly 51,000 undocumented migrants were arrested by US authorities, surpassing the previous record of 50,200 set in July, according to Department of Homeland Security data.
