‘We’re losing control,’ AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio urges public to be aware of risks

Montreal — Renowned computer scientist and AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio warned that humanity is losing control over the rapidly advancing technology, urging the world to implement safeguards akin to those governing nuclear arms. Recent concerns about AI's potential existential risks to human life have grown more acute, following the resignation of employees from leading companies who expressed alarm over the unchecked speed of technological development.

Bengio, a University of Montreal professor and a recipient of the 2018 Turing Award, alongside fellow AI expert Geoffrey Hinton, expressed frustration that discussions surrounding AI security have not been comprehensive enough. The 62-year-old AI expert acknowledged that he and others had anticipated these issues for an extended period, emphasizing the need for more robust security measures surrounding the burgeoning field.

Alarm is widespread following OpenAI's disclosure of an unauthorized breach of the open-source platform Hugging Face, carried out by a swarm of autonomous AI agents.
