US families ramp up efforts for loved ones’ release from China ahead of Xi’s visit

As Chinese President Xi Jinping prepares to visit Washington, US families of detained Americans in China are intensifying their efforts for their loved ones' release. Chen Youlin, a Chinese-American scientist, was arrested at Beijing's airport in October 2024, leaving his wife Rong Yufang and family without the ability to see or communicate with him for over 670 days.

Rong expressed the emotional toll of being separated from her husband, stating that the uncertainty surrounding his future has become a prison for their family.

Chen is being held on national security allegations, while the cases of Americans Min Zin, Dawn Michelle Hunt, and Nelson Wells Jr. vary. Zin and Wells Jr. have spent over a decade in Chinese prisons for drug convictions, while Chen and Zin are accused of espionage. The US government has labeled them as "wrongfully detained," prompting the families to push for their release through both quiet diplomacy and public advocacy.

The families' approach ranges from initially favoring a low-profile strategy to transitioning to public advocacy when private efforts fail. While some attribute Chen's and Zin's detentions to their academic work, others believe it is linked to their origins as students activists in Myanmar. The US government's Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs has emphasized that hostage diplomacy has no place in the US-China relationship.

Despite the Chinese Embassy rejecting the "wrongfully detained" designation, US families persist in their efforts to secure their loved ones' release. The situation highlights the risks American citizens face in China's legal system, as US President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping work to stabilize ties and Beijing courts foreign investors, academics, and tourists.
