US extends visa denial for Palestinian officials ahead of UNGA

The United States has extended visa sanctions on Palestinian Authority officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to the State Department. This move comes after the PA and PLO failed to reform their actions, despite commitments to the United States and ongoing activities that undermine peace efforts.

The State Department accused both groups of internationalizing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through organizations like the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice, and continuing to pay stipends to terrorists. The US denied Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas an entry visa to attend the UN General Assembly, citing security, foreign policy, and extremism concerns.

This follows similar denials in previous years, including a denial of entry to Abbas last year. The Palestinian Authority, representing the Palestinian people at the UN, is an observer state and not a full member, holding the same status as the Vatican. Several UN members, including France, recognized a Palestinian state at the UN last year.
