UK’s Burnham, Canada’s Carney discuss AI challenges and online safety cooperation

AI safety has become a hot topic worldwide, with concerns growing about the potential risks such technology poses to humanity. The debate intensified recently, with leaders of major AI companies calling for action on regulation. U.S. President Donald Trump staunchly opposes any such measures.

Canada has been active in addressing AI safety, with Minister Evan Solomon acknowledging the risks but not explicitly confirming that AI poses an existential threat. Canada's AI Safety Institute has received $50 million in recent funding, and a new investment of up to $300 million has been announced between Canada, Germany, and Bengio's LawZero non-profit.

AI companies are advocating for slower development to allow for greater safety measures. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have both called for a slower pace, while Elon Musk echoed this sentiment. However, Canadian AI company Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez opposes the idea of loosening antitrust restrictions, arguing that it would give a competitive advantage to a few U.S. companies.

While Canada has taken steps to address AI safety, Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a global "technology stability" body to coordinate international efforts. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed this sentiment, stating that Europe is ready to work with other like-minded partners, including Canada and the UK, on AI model evaluation, verification, early warning, and AI security. Canada's role in this global effort remains to be seen.
