U.S. approves more than $8B in investments for Ukraine, Jordan, Africa

The U.S. Department for Commerce (DFC) has approved investments exceeding $8 billion for Ukraine, Jordan, and African nations, according to Reuters and Ukrinform. These funds aim to bolster essential services, promote American export growth, ensure reliable energy, and advance U.S. technology, with a notable focus on digital investments.

Ben Black, CEO of the agency, highlighted that these projects will not only help secure critical infrastructure and resources in Ukraine, Jordan, and across Africa but also strengthen U.S. companies vying for dominance in vital markets worldwide. Among the initiatives, an investment in Ukrainian telecom giant Vodafone Ukraine and a $500 million trade financing facility are included. The latter will aid U.S. companies in accessing emerging markets in South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Additionally, a loan of $85 million to DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, will be utilized to expand its battery storage capabilities. The DFC has also committed $155 million to WIOCC, a digital infrastructure provider in Africa, underlining Washington's backing for projects that are seen as vital for the expansion of U.S. technology firms.

Furthermore, Jordan will receive a loan to support the construction, operation, and maintenance of a seawater desalination plant and conveyance system. The DFC, the primary investment arm of the U.S. government, has raised its investment cap to $205 billion and shifted its focus towards mining, energy, and digital infrastructure.

This strategic shift is aimed at challenging China's global influence and securing essential supply chains for the United States.
