Todd Boehly quits Chelsea selling ownership stake

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly announced his departure from the club's ownership after agreeing to sell his stake to Clearlake Capital. The Premier League side confirmed the change on Wednesday, revealing that the US private equity group would assume full control of the London-based team. Boehly, who joined as part-owner in 2022, expressed his gratitude towards Chelsea's coaches, players, leadership, staff, and supporters during a statement.

He emphasized that his partnership with Clearlake and their investment efforts had contributed to the club's immediate and long-term success. Boehly is confident that Chelsea is well-positioned for continued success under Clearlake's leadership. Additionally, co-owner Mark Walter agreed to sell his share to Clearlake Capital. The trio - Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss - each held a 12.8% stake in Chelsea following their 2020 takeover.

Boehly and Walter agreed to sell their stakes to Clearlake Capital, with Wyss remaining an "important stakeholder and partner" in the ownership group. Clearlake previously held a 61.5% share as part of the original deal. Chelsea revealed that the change in ownership would not impact the club's day-to-day operations, leadership, or overall strategy.

Xabi Alonso was appointed as head coach this summer, and Chelsea's fans expressed hope that the new ownership would learn from past mistakes. Liam Rosenior's father was once sacked from the club in just ten minutes, and the son has secured a six-year contract with Chelsea.
