Think your AI chatbot is up to date? Here is how stale ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini actually are

AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, are designed to answer a wide range of questions, but determining how current their knowledge truly is can be challenging. These models are not always accurate or up-to-date, as their knowledge cutoff may result in a gap of weeks or months between the world they know and the world you live in.

For example, when asked about the newest iPhone models, both ChatGPT and Gemini accurately stated that Apple's latest hardware tier consists of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Duo (its first foldable smartphone). Apple announced these models during its Surprise and Shine keynote event, skipping the standard baseline iPhone 18 and focusing on its premium hardware.

However, Claude mistakenly believed the newest iPhones were part of the iPhone 17 series, suggesting that "The newest iPhones are the iPhone 17 series." This example highlights the importance of verifying information from AI sources, as even the latest models may not always be aware of the most recent developments.

Another question tested the knowledge of AI models regarding the newest flagship Claude model. While ChatGPT correctly identified Claude Fable 5.1 as the latest model, released in September 2026, Claude 4.6 failed to understand that Claude Fable 5.1 is already publicly available. Claude Opus 5, part of the current generation alongside Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Haiku 4.5, was the most recent model that Claude 4.6 could recognize.

In terms of global events, all three chatbots accurately answered that the World Cup in 2026 was won by Spain. Claude even provided additional information about the tournament, such as Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal and individual accolades like Rodri winning the Golden Ball and Unai Simón taking the Golden Glove.

When asked about a new feature added to Siri in iOS 27, all three chatbots correctly identified Siri AI as the newest addition. However, Claude had previously expressed the belief that Siri AI was essentially a ChatGPT-like version, despite not knowing that the iPhone 18 was available.

Lastly, when inquiring about third-party AI integration in Google Home, ChatGPT and Gemini confirmed its availability, while Claude was unaware of this development. This discrepancy is particularly interesting given that Google Home documentation explicitly mentions Claude in relation to the Model Control Protocol (MCP) Home.
