The crucial Uttar Pradesh test of the BJP’s hegemony

The political dominance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has shown signs of weakening following the 2024 general election, where the party lost its parliamentary majority and had to rely on allies to form the government. This has led to growing disillusionment among the populace, fueled by issues such as rising prices, unemployment, and failures in governance, particularly irregularities in the education and examination systems.

The BJP's missteps were further highlighted by the defeat of the Constitutional Amendment Bill on delimitation and women’s reservation, the withdrawal of the then Union Education Minister in protest, and the overall failure of the monsoon session of Parliament, with both the Prime Minister and Home Minister absent.

The absence of these leaders from Parliament has raised questions about the government's willingness to be held accountable for its actions, notably the excessive police force used against student protesters on July 20. Despite these setbacks, the BJP remains a strong political force with a significant electoral base and ideological appeal. However, the real test of the party's hegemony lies in Uttar Pradesh, where the forces that propelled the BJP to power may be facing limitations.
