Thailand prepares UNESCO bid for 150th birth anniversary of Kruba Sriwichai

Thailand's Ministry of Culture is set to submit a proposal to UNESCO to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Kruba Sriwichai, a respected Buddhist monk known for his significance in Lanna culture and community development in northern Thailand. The proposal, led by Culture Minister Sabida Thaiseth, was discussed for the first time on September 15 at the Ministry of Culture in Bangkok.

The committee reviewed the progress on the nomination, reviewed the UNESCO's submission form (Annex II), and other supporting documents in Thai and English. The finalized documents are expected to be handed over to Thailand's National Commission for UNESCO in October, paving the way for the official nomination process. The proposal aims to showcase Kruba Sriwichai's contributions to Buddhist teachings, moral and ethical growth, community building, and the restoration of religious sites.

One notable example mentioned is the construction of a road to Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, carried out through public participation and volunteerism without any state funding. Kruba Sriwichai was also involved in the restoration of temples and religious sites throughout northern Thailand. The committee has conducted research in Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and China, collaborating with academics and international networks to document the wider regional impact of what they call the "Kruba Sriwichai way."

This initiative aligns with two areas of UNESCO's mandate: social and human sciences, through his promotion of Buddhist principles and social cohesion; and culture, through community involvement in temple, historic site, and public works restoration. The proposal is anticipated to be submitted to UNESCO on December 1, 2026, with the nomination list to follow.

The proposed activities would take place from January to December 2028, celebrating Kruba Sriwichai's 150th birth anniversary. The objective is to extend beyond Lanna communities, sharing his legacy of faith, morality, culture, and volunteerism with a global audience.
