Stop ripening fruits with chemicals – Kano govt warns sellers

The Kano State Government has issued a stern warning to fruit sellers and citrus dealers against the use of chemicals or other substances to artificially ripen fruits or make them more appealing to consumers. This directive was issued by the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) during a comprehensive inspection of fruit markets throughout the state. The inspection aimed to scrutinize the storage and sale practices of fruits prior to their distribution to consumers.

Speaking at the inspection, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, the Executive Secretary of the KCPC, emphasized the council's commitment to safeguarding consumer health and sternly warned sellers against engaging in practices that could jeopardize public health. Dr. Muhammad disclosed that the council had received reports suggesting the use of certain chemicals to enhance the visual appeal of fruits or expedite their ripening process.

He made it clear that such practices would not be tolerated and that the council would take stringent action against any such violations.

The Executive Secretary emphasized that the KCPC would continue to conduct routine inspections of fruit markets and that any fruits or substances found to be harmful to consumers would be dealt with accordingly. He urged all fruit sellers and dealers to adhere strictly to safety regulations and to refrain from any practices that could compromise consumer health.

In response to the warning, Alhaji Safiyanu Abdullahi C.K., the Chairman of the Fruit Sellers and Citrus Dealers Association, stated that the association was actively educating its members about the importance of complying with relevant regulations. He encouraged members to eschew practices that could potentially harm consumers, ensuring that the industry operates in a manner that prioritizes public safety.
