Source Behind Karachi’s Mysterious Smell Revealed

Karachi experienced a foul and overwhelming smell on Wednesday that permeated several districts, including Clifton, DHA, Korangi, PECHS, MA Jinnah Road, Tower, and Kharadar. Marine experts attributed the stench not to any accident or leakage, but to a natural phenomenon involving marine vegetation. According to WWF-Pakistan Technical Adviser Muhammad Moazzam Khan, the smell arises as phytoplankton and other aquatic plants succumb and decompose in coastal waters after flourishing during the monsoon season.

This process typically occurs near the conclusion of the monsoon, when shifting wind and water conditions lead to the natural demise of these microscopic plants. The decomposition of these plants releases a repugnant odor that can be carried inland. Experts also noted that weak sea breezes contributed to the prolonged presence of the smell over the city.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that the breeze remained feeble throughout much of the day on Wednesday, but picked up in the evening. Meteorologists anticipate stronger sea breezes starting Thursday, which should aid in clearing the unpleasant smell from Karachi.
