Should you play Casual mode or Classic mode in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave?

The development team behind Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave has explained their decision to provide just one save file for the game. Nintendo and Intelligent System's upcoming strategy RPG features four swappable protagonists in its first half, along with various customization options and follower recruitment. Despite having the capability for multiple save files, the team opted for a single one to maintain the game's narrative structure and gameplay flow.

Director Toshiyuki Kusakihara stated that the game's core concept revolves around converging experiences into one overall progression path. The idea is that every player's actions and experiences within the game are valuable and preserved, eventually coalescing into a unified outcome. This philosophy extends to the game's structure, which transitions to a single hero for its latter half, drawn from the four protagonists players have come to know.

To ensure that players' accumulated experiences are not wasted, the team implemented a system where save data from each chapter of every protagonist is preserved. This allows players to jump back to specific points in the game, replay chapters, revisit maps, cutscenes, or battles, and retry situations as many times as they desire. This feature supports replayability and encourages players to explore different paths and outcomes within the game.

Eshmel, a fifth protagonist introduced at the end of development, serves as a broader view of the four main characters' stories. Initially, the team intended to have eight protagonists, but they recognized that having too many could complicate the game and hinder the convergence of stories. Thus, they narrowed the focus to four protagonists, with Eshmel acting as a connecting character to unify the narrative.
