Sarawak gets RM1.5b interim special grant as talks continue on annual formula, says Anwar

KUCHING, Sept 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an increase in Sarawak's interim special grant to RM1.5 billion for the current year, up from the previous RM600 million allocation. The Federal Government intends to negotiate with Sabah and Sarawak state governments to establish a sustainable formula for calculating the annual Special Grant rate.

At the Malaysia Day 2026 celebrations in Kuching, Anwar declared the RM1.5 billion increase in Sarawak's grant, citing solidarity, friendship, and good negotiations. The celebration was attended by Sarawak's Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Anwar expressed his gratitude for the ability to implement projects and programs for the benefit of the people, stating that no issue in the Malaysian federation is insurmountable. He also called for collaboration between national oil and gas companies Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak to expedite the conclusion of their commercial agreement.
