Russian drone attack damages building housing Kyivstar equipment in Kyiv region, no casualties

On 17 September, Russia launched a significant missile and drone attack on Ukraine, targeting Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa Oblast, among other regions. The assault inflicted damage on civilian infrastructure in Kyiv, affecting apartment buildings and educational facilities, while also impacting water infrastructure. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 20 people, including at least two children, sustained injuries during the strike.

Kyivvodokanal, the city's water utility, confirmed that its specialists had restored water operations, bringing the supply back online across the capital.

Ukrainian authorities have expressed concerns that Russia could target critical water infrastructure as winter approaches, potentially exacerbating the already dire situation for civilians. Throughout history, Russia has utilized winter strikes to target Ukraine's essential infrastructure, particularly electricity and heating systems, leaving residents without power, heat, and basic services during freezing conditions.

This winter is anticipated to witness an intensified campaign by Russia, which has been ramping up attacks since the summer, extending to food-related infrastructure and supplies, in addition to energy facilities.

Russia launched a comprehensive missile and drone assault on Ukraine overnight, including 157 Shahed-type attack drones and decoy drones. The ballistic missiles fired included Iskander-M, S-400, and North Korean KN-23 missiles, launched from Russia's Bryansk and Voronezh oblasts. Furthermore, four Kalibr cruise missiles and Oniks missiles were deployed.

However, Ukraine's air defenses managed to destroy or suppress 131 aerial targets, but none of the ballistic weapons were intercepted. Of the 131 targets, seven Bandeol/Dan-T missiles and 124 Shahed, Gerbera, and other drones were neutralized.

In Kyiv, the overnight strikes affected multiple districts, including Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Solomianskyi. Notably, a 16-story apartment building in Dniprovskyi district suffered extensive damage, resulting in 16 injuries, including a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy. Kyiv's military administration also reported a strike on a warehouse building in Podilskyi district. Russian attacks on Kyiv have left 20 people injured, with five hospitalized.

In Odesa Oblast, Russian attacks continued throughout the night, injuring seven people, including two children. One Russian drone targeted a 19-story apartment building, destroying 10 apartments on the 14th–16th floors and damaging 11 cars. Additional strikes damaged residential buildings, a kindergarten, a dormitory, a restaurant's outdoor area, warehouses, garages, and vehicles. An elderly woman and the 13-year-old child among the injured.
