'Powers That Violate International Law Sit In Security Council': Guterres Calls For Urgent UN Reforms

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for urgent reforms to the United Nations Security Council, citing the presence of global powers that violate international law on its membership. Guterres argued that geopolitical divisions have contributed to the council's inability to act effectively, stating that the organization reflects a power structure established decades ago.

He emphasized the need for a "redistribution of power" to better reflect the changing global order. Guterres highlighted that the Security Council's paralysis has led to countries believing they can act without consequences, as they are aware the council is paralyzed. He noted that this impunity has resulted in an increase of countries violating international law, including humanitarian and human rights law.

Guterres also spoke about the changing global economy, with emerging economies gaining a larger share of the global GDP, indicating that the balance of power has shifted since the formation of many global institutions. He stressed that the current power relations do not align with today's realities and urged for reforms in multilateral institutions, particularly the Security Council and the Bretton Woods system.
