Ploughing Championships putting Offaly firmly on the map

The National Ploughing Championships, held in Screggan near Tullamore, Co Offaly, has drawn over 275,000 visitors, making the region a focal point for attention. The three-day event, estimated to contribute more than €50 million to the economy, has provided significant benefits to the local area. On the final evening, Clara's Shane Lowry made headlines after winning the Irish Open at Doonbeg in Co Clare.

Political leaders, media representatives, and approximately 77,000 people converged on the site for the first day of the championships. Accommodation was booked solid for the entire week, with local hotels and surrounding towns experiencing similar demand.

The event requires a substantial workforce, with over 2,000 temporary staff, volunteers, and stewards working to ensure its smooth operation. Hundreds of Gardaí are deployed to manage traffic and ensure safe travel for attendees. The ploughing site transforms into a temporary town, featuring over 2,000 trade stands that provide businesses with an opportunity to showcase their products to a large audience.

The host county, Offaly, benefits from increased visibility, highlighting its central location, excellent road network, and robust infrastructure. Local businesses also enjoy a surge in patronage, with increased spending on accommodation, food, and local products during the event. The Experience Offaly Pavilion, funded by the county council, showcases local crafts, food, and green technology products, fostering business connections and collaborations among exhibitors.
